My World Is Made of Song Lyrics

9//13//18
I have always loved music. I grew up in a household that always had sounds going on. My brother taught himself how to play piano, guitar, and the harmonica, and my parents have a weekly karaoke night just with each other. My entire family is always singing, humming, and tapping throughout the house, and I was heavily influenced by their natural ear for music from a young age.  In Kindergarten, I had my friend come over weekly to listen to Taylor Swift’s debut album with me from start to finish, and then we would write our own songs. Mine were usually about things like a boy stealing my crayons or about my love for my pet fishies. I’ve grown up playing piano, and took up the drums when I was in 6th grade. There’s never been a moment where I haven’t seen music as home.
In fact, I often see music as my therapist. When it’s just one of those days where nothing seems to be going right, I go to my room, shut my door, and turn on my chill playlist to allow my mind to reset and focus on the positive. If I’m at school, I often put on my headphones and take a walk during my free period to refresh myself and not let things get to me if I'm having a rough day. Depending on my mood, I turn to my Spotify playlists and headphones in just about any circumstance and choose the right playlist. If I’m having an amazing day and want to emphasize that for myself, I would put on my “sun” playlist. If I want to take a chill, relaxed vibe, I would turn on my “stars” playlist. If I’m feeling down in the dumps and having a bad day, I would turn on my “moon” playlist.
I created these three playlists around spring break last year when I realized I needed go-to songs depending on my mood, but I have since then created around 5 more playlists, some of them a compilation of songs I liked throughout a certain month, or ones that are tied to a certain genre. I could talk about who/what I listen to for days on end, but I’ll just share a little summary of what I enjoy on a mood-to-mood basis.
My music taste varies a lot, but there are a few genres and artists that I often go back to. When I’m in the mood to chill out and relax, I usually put on some chill acoustic music with solely vocals and a few instruments, usually guitar or piano ballads from artists such as Billie Eilish, Vance Joy, Rex Orange County, and many less-known artists like George Ogilvie. When I’m in a cheerful mood, I tend to listen to more electronic pop, from artists such as LANY, Chelsea Cutler, and Troye Sivan. When I’m in the car and want to jam out, I put on my rap playlist with songs by artists like Drake, Chance the Rapper, Trey Songz, and Travis Scott. Some days I like to listen to some old-ish songs from Michael Jackson, Neyo, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, and Justin Bieber (yes okay his My World 2.0 album is classic take my word for it), while other days when I feel more explorative I listen to new EDM like Odesza, Mura Masa, and Flume.
As you can see, my choice of music depends on what situation I’m in but I believe there is always a right song for the right time - you just have to find it! Every song is so intricate and has the power to make you feel something, and I constantly find myself intrigued with how a singer/songwriter can intertwine their stories with rhythm, a string of notes, and especially their construction of lyrics. I constantly find myself thinking about a song lyric that stuck with me from a certain song, leading me to get that song and lyric stuck in my head for hours, even days. Songwriters have the world in their hands when it comes to making an impact on someone, just with the music they create. They’re called artists for a reason, and every piece of art they share with the world is so unique, so there’s an infinite amount of adventuring you can do just by listening.
I could keep talking about my love for music for days, but instead I’ll just link some of my Spotify playlists below and let you hear these stories for yourself! Also, I love finding people with the same passion for a music genre as me, and I also love finding out about different artists and songs that I’ve never heard before!! I fall in love with songs fast, so feel free to share what you listen to:)

  1. I loved this post! I also really love your taste in music so I'm sure all your playlists are amazing. It's so true that music is an adventure. Sometimes I listen to a new song for the first time and I'm struck by how hard it hits me immediately--the mixture of lyrics and music and the voice is so powerful (@ postcard by Troye Sivan). I also really related to how you talking about how you grew up in a musical household and how that shaped your love for music because I grew up in a very soccer heavy household which I think made me more likely to be a soccer fan. Also a random PS my dad has a shirt that he loves that says "my brain is 80% song lyrics" your title reminded me of it lol.

  2. As someone who's also obsessed with music, I love this. I started perfecting the art of the mix tape when I was in high school, and though the art of the playlist is a little less challenging and exciting (you can't control the splices or the timing between songs, you don't get to make a handmade cover), it's also important. My favorite detail in this post is "my parents have a weekly karaoke night just with each other." That's pretty special.

  3. I can not agree more to music being a therapist. Personally, it's the best therapist. After a tiring day, I don't want to do anything but listen to music. No physical effort is needed when listening, which is amazing. I enjoy listening to many genres of music as well. Depending on my mood, the playlist that I listen to also changes. Music has a way of bringing people together, and this blog post definitely made me think about my own habits involving music. Great post Grace!

  4. I love this blog post so much! I definitely sympathize with "music as therapist" but for me some music is a good focus tool as well. I do subjects like math best in "silence" where I actually talk out loud to myself, but if I'm writing an essay I'll put on classical string music (my tastes are outdated by a few hundred years). The music will get really stuck in my head, and the next day I'll find myself pining for an old song. I've got a sweet Pandora playlist going on.

I also really like your descriptions of your family's shared music tastes. In particular, you describe going through the days tapping, humming, and singing, which really resonates with me.

  5. This is such a great post! Your voice is really strong in this, and I think that the use of music as a therapist is a really interesting topic. I always love hearing about other people's music taste, since I think it says a lot. I agree that different songs fit different moods, and I have a couple of playlists for different scenarios as well.

Your stories about growing up with music are also really interesting. I started playing trombone in fifth grade and it definitely became a really important creative outlet for a few years- music is a great therapist, whether playing or listening.

  6. I relate to this post so much. I think that music is something magical and what it does can't really be explained. I really liked the way that you linked the different songs that you listen to! I will definitely listen to them later. Although we don't always agree with our music tastes, I think we can both agree that music is a lot of times what brings us together :)

  7. At a summer camp last summer I met a chillest who is going to college to become a musical therapist. I had no idea that such a job existed but after thinking about it for a while and revisiting it while reading your post it is a completely understandable profession. Music is uniquely powerful in its own special way.
